Early Life, Family and Training

Born in the Australian town of Ballarat on 25 December 1879, Will Longstaff was shaped by the creative spirit of his surroundings. He was the cousin of the portrait painter Sir John Longstaff, a connection that placed him within a lineage of significant artistic talent. This familial tie likely provided a quiet backdrop of ambition as he began to find his own way through the visual arts.

His formal education began at Grenville College in Ballarat, where he first learned to observe the world. Seeking to refine his technical skill, he moved on to study art at the Ballarat School of Mines. It was during these formative years in Victoria that he developed the foundational discipline required for a life spent translating memory and sight onto canvas. He pursued his studies both within the structured walls of the school and through private instruction, gathering the tools necessary to eventually capture the heavy atmosphere of the battlefields he would later encounter.

Military Service and War Artistry

Longstaff’s life was shaped by the heavy realities of conflict long before he became a chronicler of them. His first brush with combat came during the Second Boer War, when he served as a member of the South African Light Horse. This early experience with the rigors of soldiering prepared him for a much more harrowing chapter when the First World War broke out. He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force, driven by the duty of his era, but the campaign in Gallipoli would leave him with more than just memories; he was injured during the fighting, a physical toll that would forever mark his experience of the war.

As the conflict moved through its most intense phases, his artistic eye found a specific, technical purpose. While serving in Egypt and later in France, he was trained in the complex art of camouflage. This specialized skill led to his appointment as a camouflage officer for the 2nd Australian Division. By 1918, his ability to translate the chaos and the landscape of the Western Front into visual form led to his appointment as an Official War Artist. He spent those final campaigns capturing the essence of the struggle, turning his sketches into profound records of the men and the earth they fought upon.

Key Works and Famous Paintings

In the years following the Great War, Longstaff turned his gaze toward the battlefields of Belgium and France, seeking to capture the spiritual weight of the landscapes he had once navigated as a soldier. In 1927, he produced Menin Gate at Midnight, a work also known as Ghosts of Menin Gate. This painting emerged from a personal vision during a midnight walk near the Menin Gate in Ypres, where he claimed to see the ghostly figures of fallen soldiers marching eastward. The work achieved immediate success, even being purchased for 2000 guineas by Lord Woolavington, who later presented it to the Australian government. It remains a central piece in the collection of the Australian War Memorial in Canberra.

His preoccupation with the spirits of the fallen continued through his other significant compositions. During that same year, 1927, he painted The Rearguard (The Spirit of the ANZAC), a piece that captured the essence of the Australian and New Zealand forces. This work was acquired by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in 1928 and later moved through various private and public collections. Earlier, in 1919, he had completed 8th August, 1918, a work born from his experiences during the final campaigns of the Western Front.

As he moved into the next decade, his brush continued to trace the memory of conflict. In 1931, he painted Ghosts of Vimy Ridge, a piece that further explored the haunting, spiritualist style that defined his later career. Through these works, Longstaff sought to give form to the unseen presence of those who had perished in the mud of Flanders and France.
