The intensity of the contrast established by the chiaroscuro of the background is transported by the planes of the faces with a deliberate approximation to Cézanne. The profile presents a schematic treatment that unbinds the motif from an apparently suggested portrait. This piece comprises a set that verses diverse treatments of similar motifs where various pictorial understandings are traversed, attributable to the avant-gardes that impressed the artist. The inclined head inscribes a melancholic note which is expressed in the title itself. They carry a residue of interiority that the expressionism of the other heads integrates into the actual formal structure of the painting.
