Julia Fish is an American painter and draftsperson born in 1950 in Toledo, United States. Her practice involves painting in oil on stretched rectangular canvases of varying sizes. Rather than capturing a single instant, her work is a result of continuous observation over time, creating what she describes as a "parallel system to a lived experience." Her subjects often include everyday elements such as leaves seen through a window, sections of floor tiles, or an old-fashioned light fixture.
Her technical approach involves a slow process of distilling images through drawing and painting. She often works with memory and recollection, sometimes waiting months to translate a visual impression into a finished work. Her paintings frequently focus on the surface of the canvas, emphasizing the weave and the pigment, often achieving a balance between the transcription of an object and abstraction.
Evolution of Subject and Space
Throughout her career, Fish's focus has shifted from atmospheric subjects like rain or sky to the prosaic elements of her urban environment. In the 1990s, she produced works like the Entry series, which included paintings of floor tiles that matched the exact dimensions of the original objects. Her later work transitioned toward exploring thresholds, stairs, landings, and the movement of light within a room.
Her Living Rooms series, created between 2001 and 2011, utilized floor plans of her home to create abstracted representations of space. These works were created at one-seventh the size of the rooms they represented. Her exhibitions have included:
