The Life and Art of Max Nauta

Born in Deventer, Marten Ykes "Max" Nauta was the son of a baker and a gifted self-taught painter. His artistic journey began with drawing lessons from the architect L. Groen in Alkmaar, eventually leading him to the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam. Under the guidance of professors such as Carel Dake and Nicolaas van der Waay, he refined his skills as a painter. His travels took him to Czechoslovakia, where he spent two years and organized an exhibition of Dutch art on behalf of the Vereniging Van Gogh. During this time, he established connections with various Czech artists and met Helene Kettner, whom he married in 1926.

Nauta's diverse oeuvre is categorized into several distinct areas. He produced paintings, sketches, etchings, watercolours, and gouaches of monumental architecture, townscapes, and landscapes, often focusing on scenes in snow or at night. He also created studies of folklore and folk characters in traditional costumes from Friesland, North Holland, and Czechoslovakia. Furthermore, he was a noted portraitist, receiving prestigious commissions for official portraits, including a 1955 portrait of Winston Churchill painted at Chartwell.

Stained Glass and Symbolism

Beyond his work on canvas, Nauta was a significant stained glass artist. His passion for Bohemian glass led him to create painted glass windows that utilized colored glass as a background to achieve a radiance reminiscent of medieval cathedrals. His glasswork often incorporated symbolism and allegory, drawing from the Dutch Protestant tradition and freemasonry. His notable commissions include works for the Grote Kerk of The Hague and the Dutch Church, Austin Friars in London, as well as eighteen windows for St. Andrew's Church in Harrow, England.

His artistic contributions were recognized on an international stage, including participation in the art competition at the 1924 Summer Olympics. His works are preserved in several esteemed collections, such as:

  • Joods Historisch Museum, Amsterdam
  • Het Loo Palace, Apeldoorn
  • Amsterdam City Hall (Stadhuis)
  • Second Chamber building, States General, The Hague
