Carlos Rivera Villafañe is a Puerto Rican painter, sculptor, printmaker, creator of installations, actions, and interventions, and teacher. He was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico, in 1966. Rivera Villafañe earned his BFA at the Puerto Rico School of Plastic Arts in 1989. His work often depicts and interrogates contemporary attitudes toward violence, using paintings, prints, sculptures, and installations as his mediums. Rivera Villafañe's most famous work is the Letras de Ponce, a landmark in his hometown that consists of five 20-foot-high letters that spell the name of the city. The letters were designed by Rivera Villafañe and are said to be known to every Puerto Rican.
