Lü Ji or Liu Chi or Lü Chi or Lü Ki, courtesy name Tingzhen and sobriquet Leyu, was a native of Ningbo in Zhejiang. He was a famous court painter of the middle Ming dynasty. He initially studied the bird-and-flower style of the early Ming painter Bian Wenjin and became the most revered painter in China for his big, colorful, and dazzling paintings. He worked in the Southern Song ink-wash style, which had remained popular in that region through the intervening centuries, and was summoned to be a court painter. He was known for his paintings of mandarin ducks and cotton rose hibiscus.
