The Life and Landscapes of James Ranalph Jackson
Born in Bunnythorpe, New Zealand, James Ranalph Jackson was an Australian painter whose life was deeply connected to the waters of Sydney Harbour. After moving to Darlinghurst, Sydney, as a child, the harbour became a major motif in his work for the rest of his life. His artistic journey took him from an apprenticeship as a decorator to studying at the Royal Art Society of New South Wales and J. S. Watkins's art school. Seeking further instruction, he traveled to London, where he was encouraged by Sir Frank Brangwyn to paint thickly. His studies continued in the Latin Quarter in Paris at the Académie Colarossi, and he also traveled to Venice, where he painted the Rialto Bridge.
Jackson's career was marked by significant public recognition. In 1914, the Art Gallery of New South Wales purchased his painting Oleanders. His 1923 work, Middle Harbour from Manly Heights, was purchased by the Manly Council and became the first artwork in the Manly Art Gallery and Museum collection. Throughout his career, he was a member of the Australian Art Association and a Fellow of the Royal Art Society of New South Wales. During the Second World War, he joined the camouflage section of the Department of Defence.
Artistic Subject Matter and Recognition
The works of Jackson often captured the essence of the Australian landscape and seascape. While living on the North Shore, he focused heavily on the views of Sydney Harbour in both oils and watercolour. One notable example is The Harbour, Neutral Bay, Sydney, which depicts the beginnings of high-rise development in the early 20th century. During the Great Depression, his focus shifted toward rural landscapes in New South Wales, particularly around Bellingen, Dorrigo, and the mountains of the upper reaches of the Macleay River. In his later years, he also painted in Victoria, including the Dandenong ranges and the area around Lake Eildon.
