A Life Shaped by the Air
Robert C. Barnfield was born in Gloucester, United Kingdom, in 1856. His early years were spent training in London, where he learned the precise, structured lines of an architect. This technical foundation remained with him, even as his physical needs forced a change in direction. His asthma made the heavy air of London difficult to bear, prompting a move to New Zealand in 1883. By 1885, he arrived in Honolulu aboard the steamship Explorer, seeking a climate that would allow him to breathe more easily.
In Hawaii, he found a different kind of rhythm. He lived in a cottage on the grounds of Queens Hospital and spent much of his time in a studio in Oahu. When the air in Honolulu became too much, he sought the shade of the Kona district, boarding with the Daniel Barrett Family. He was a man who lived according to the requirements of his lungs, moving between the coast and the shade to find balance.
The Subjects of the Brush
His work often looked toward the water and the life within it. He was known for capturing coastal views and the specific forms of fish. His hands moved between the structured planning of his architectural training and the fluid, organic shapes of the natural world. His subjects included:
- Landscape and coastal views
- Detailed studies of fish
- Re-imaginings of historical encounters, such as his version of Wine'e and Tianna
- Portraits of local figures, including Princess Ka'iulani
He did not only paint; he taught. In his Honolulu studio, he shared what he knew of light and form with others. His watercolors of fish show a quiet, close-up attention to detail, a way of looking at the small, moving parts of the ocean that requires a steady hand and a patient eye.
A Quiet Legacy in Honolulu
Barnfield died on 14 May 1893, at the age of 37. Though his time was short, his presence in the Hawaiian art scene left a mark that remains in public collections. His paintings are held in the Bishop Museum, the Honolulu Museum of Art, and ʻIolani Palace. These works remain as records of a specific time and place, captured by a man who moved through the islands looking for a way to breathe.
