The Architecture of Light and Landscape
The physical weight of wood and the precision of construction define the early years of Tom Keesee. Born in 1954 in the United States, he spent summers working as a rough carpenter, a period of manual labor that informs the structural understanding found in his later compositions. This tactile relationship with material transitioned into a formal study of art, leading him to the John Herron School of Art in Indianapolis, where he earned his BFA in 1977. He moved from the physical assembly of structures to the deliberate layering of pigment, eventually pursuing an MFA at Miami University in Ohio.
His career is marked by a deep, technical connection to the institutions that house art. Before establishing himself as a painter, Keesee worked behind the scenes, shaping the way the public encounters visual works. He served as an installation specialist at several significant locations, gaining a rare, intimate knowledge of how art occupies space.
Technique and Texture
Keesee’s practice oscillates between the precision of printmaking and the heavy, physical presence of oil painting. His landscapes are not mere observations; they are built through texture. In his oil works, he employs a thick impasto technique, applying paint so heavily that the surface becomes a topographical map of the scene itself. This tactile approach contrasts with his work in prints and monoprints, where he renders nature with a different kind of controlled grace. In 1988, his monoprint Swimming Toward the Lights demonstrated this ability to capture movement and atmosphere on gray paper, a work held within the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields.
The transition from the museum floor to the academic studio defines his later years. After a decade of working in various museum capacities, he moved into teaching, serving as an adjunct professor of art at the University of Saint Francis. This dual existence—the practitioner and the educator—allows him to maintain a quiet, steady presence in the regional art scene, producing works that bridge the gap between the structural logic of a carpenter and the fluid expression of a painter.
