Arnot Art Museum

Origins and History of the Museum

The Arnot Art Museum, located at 235 Lake Street in Elmira, New York, traces its beginnings to the legacy of Matthias Hallenback Arnot. A banker who lived from 1833 to 1910, Arnot sought to ensure his personal collection would remain accessible to the public. Following his death, his art collection and the building that housed it were bequeathed to the City of Elmira in 1910.

This act of generosity led to the formal establishment of the institution in 1913. The museum emerged from a private collection, transitioning from a personal residence into a municipal space for the study of art. It remains a significant presence in the Elmira Civic Historic District, preserving the intent of its founder through the continued presence of his donated works.

The Building and its Architecture

The architectural presence of the museum begins with the original mansion, a structure built in 1833 by John Arnot, Sr. This primary residence is designed in the Greek-Revival style, characterized by its formal proportions and historical weight. As a contributing property within the Elmira Civic Historic District, the site maintains a direct connection to the urban fabric of Elmira, New York.

The evolution of the site continued through the late nineteenth century when a picture gallery addition was constructed in the 1890s. This specific expansion was designed to house the growing collection, featuring extensive gas lighting and a large skylight that allows natural light to enter the space. The interior atmosphere is shaped by these antique rooms, where wooden flooring provides a quiet, vintage character to the viewing experience.

The footprint of the institution expanded further in 1982 with the addition of a new wing. This modern enlargement allows the museum to accommodate contemporary works alongside the established historical collections. The progression from a private 1833 mansion to a multi-winged institution reflects a continuous adaptation of the physical space to meet the needs of the art it holds.

Diverse Art Collections and Departments

The permanent collection holds a significant presence of European paintings from the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. These works exist alongside 19th and 20th-century American art, creating a dialogue between different eras and geographies. The presence of Asian and Egyptian artifacts provides a connection to ancient traditions within the same walls. This breadth allows for a quiet study of how different cultures have approached form and representation over many centuries.

Surrealist works are also held within the collection, offering a departure from the more traditional European and American holdings. The museum's focus extends into the 21st century through a collection dedicated to contemporary representational art. This modern emphasis ensures that the dialogue between historical traditions and current artistic practices remains active. The arrangement of these pieces allows for a direct encounter with the evolution of visual language.

Exhibitions and Special Programs

The museum maintains a rotating schedule of exhibitions that bring specific perspectives to the permanent collection. Through 31 October, The Mouse Houses of Dr. Robert Brill is on view. As the year progresses, the focus shifts to Views of the Lansdown Tower, Bath, which remains on display through 19 December. During this same period, the 78th Regional Exhibition is also held, continuing through 19 December.

Seasonal events provide different ways to engage with the local art community. The Holiday Art Market takes place from 13 November to 31 December. Looking toward the following year, the 91st Palette Awards is scheduled from 22 January 2027 to 19 March 2027.
