About the Artist

Nicholas Roerich was a Russian artist who spent the last part of his life in India. He was influenced by Eastern philosophy and Russian symbolism, and was interested in hypnosis and spiritual practices. In the East, the worship of a Mother figure such as Kali or Laxmi was widespread and likely to be predominant in Hinduism. Roerich's artistic career began in Russia where he was influenced by Russian Symbolism, a movement in Russian society centered on the spiritual. He later traveled extensively in Europe, especially Paris, taking in influences from Gauguin and Pierre Puvis de Chavannes. His paintings made between 1902 and 1906 seem related to these artists' works.
