Early Life, Family and Training
Sigurd Wandel was born on 22 February 1875 in the Frederiksberg district of Copenhagen, Denmark. He grew up in a household where art was a constant presence. His father, Oscar Andreas Wandel, was an art collector , and his mother, Elisabeth Wandel, was a painter. This environment was shared with his brother, Carl Ellis Wandel, and his uncle, the naval officer and polar explorer Carl Frederick Wandel.
His formal training began at the Teknisk skole. From there, he moved toward the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, where he studied from 1892 to 1895. His education continued through various periods at Zahrtmanns malerskole, specifically during 1895–1904, 1899, and 1904. He also returned to the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts between 1895 and 1904 to refine his practice.
Travels and Artistic Development
In 1895, Wandel joined the Ingolf expedition to Greenland, working as a draftsman during the trip. This period of sketching in the north preceded his time in Europe. In 1896, he traveled to Italy alongside Zahrtmann. This movement through Europe allowed him to observe different light and forms before he moved toward more formal academic study.
His training took him to the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts, where he stayed from 1896 to 1897. While in Dresden, he spent time in the galleries, carefully copying the works of Rembrandt. These hours spent studying the Dutch master's technique informed his approach to light and composition. He returned to his studies in Denmark after these years abroad, focusing on the way figures occupy a space.
Awards and Professional Career
Recognition from the Academy came in stages. In 1908, the Eckersberg Medal was awarded for his work Figurgruppe . This was followed by another Eckersberg Medal in 1910, this time for Morgenmaaltid . A year later, in 1911, he received the Serdin Hansens Præmie. These honors marked a steady presence within the institutional circles of Danish art .
His relationship with the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts was both academic and administrative. He was appointed as a professor in 1920, a move that prompted a strike by students who felt his approach was too traditional. Despite this friction, he remained a central figure in the institution. He eventually took on the role of director of the Academy, leading the school from 1940 to 1943.
Key Works and Artistic Subjects
Wandel’s brush often turned inward toward the quiet, lived-in spaces of domestic life . He spent much of his time capturing interiors, frequently arranging large groups of figures within these rooms. These scenes often featured his own family members or his circle of artist friends, turning private gatherings into formal compositions. One such work, Figurgruppe, selvportræt med familien (Group of Figures, Self-Portrait with the Family), brought him the academy's Medal of the Year in 1908.
Beyond the walls of the home, he looked toward the landscape. His studies of the natural world provided a different rhythm to his output, offering a counterpoint to the structured social arrangements of his portraits. He moved between these subjects—landscapes, portraits, and the complex geometry of family groups—with a steady hand. In his work Interiør med to legende børn , painted between 1912 and 1913, the focus remains on the immediate, unhurried movement of children within a room.
Later Years and Death
In his final years, Wandel remained connected to the creative circles of Denmark. He was married to Marie Wandel, who was also an artist. Their lives were lived within the established traditions of the Danish art community, a world he had navigated since his student days at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts.
The year 1947 marked a period of both publication and passing. He released the book Malede Kunstnerportrætter during this time. Shortly after, on 3 June 1947, he died in Hellerup, Denmark. He was laid to rest at Hellerup Kirkegård.
Where to See the Works Today
His paintings are scattered across many Danish collections, finding homes in various cities from the coast to the inland towns. You can find his work in the Statens Museum for Kunst and within the Hirschsprung Collection. These institutions hold pieces that reflect his focus on interiors and family groups.
Beyond these major collections, his presence is felt in several local museums. His paintings are held in Frederiksberg, Maribo, Odense, Ribe, Sønderborg, Aarhus, Aalborg, Skagen, and Rønne. Walking through these galleries allows for a quiet encounter with his landscapes and portraits in different settings.
One specific piece, Interiør med to legende børn , is part of the collection at the Statens Museum for Kunst . It remains a notable example of his ability to capture domestic life .
