Early Life, Family and Training

Born in Paris, France, on 29 July 1830, Cornelia Scheffer entered a world deeply shaped by the creative spirit of her father, the artist Ary Scheffer. Her earliest years were spent away from the bustling streets of the capital, as she was initially raised in the quiet of the countryside. This early seclusion was interrupted when she reached the age of six, at which time she was entrusted to the care of her paternal grandmother, Cornelia Scheffer-Lamme.

As she grew, the pull of her father's vocation became an inescapable part of her daily life. She spent much of her time within the walls of his studio located on rue Chaptal, in the lively district of the Nouvelle Athènes. In this corner of Paris, the atmosphere was thick with the presence of art and the movement of many creators. It was here, amidst the tools and the light of her father's workspace, that the young Cornelia began to absorb the nuances of design and form that would define her own path as an artist and designer.

Artistic Career and Commissions

Her hands were as skilled at shaping clay and stone as they were at guiding a pencil. Cornelia found her calling in the delicate arts of drawing, ceramics, and sculpture, often working within the creative atmosphere of her father's studio. She possessed a particular talent for capturing the likeness of significant figures, crafting several busts that rendered the features of her father and the writer Goethe in three dimensions. Beyond these original sculptures, she sought to preserve the visual legacy of her family by producing copies of her father's paintings, translating his brushwork into the medium of painted stone.

In 1845, her life took a new turn when she married René Marjolin, a surgeon at the hôpital Sainte-Marguerite. Despite the demands of her domestic life, her creative spirit remained active. During the 1860s, she turned her attention to the design of various pots. These ceramic pieces were notable enough that Édouard Manet chose to add his own floral motifs to them, blending their distinct artistic sensibilities. Her work was not merely decorative; it was a dialogue between form and ornament.

One of her most significant contributions to public art arose from a desire to honor her father's memory. When the designs proposed for a monument to him in Dordrecht were deemed insufficiently lifelike, Cornelia took matters into her own hands. Alongside the sculptor Joseph Mezzara, she designed a monument that sought to capture his true essence. Though she was unable to attend its inauguration in 1862 due to illness, the work remained a profound achievement of her career.

Where to See the Works Today

The legacy of Cornelia Scheffer remains preserved within several significant collections, often tied to the history of her family and her connection to the Netherlands. The Dordrechts Museum holds a place of importance in this regard, as it houses one of her works. This institution also serves as a repository for much of her father's output, for she left several of his works to the museum, ensuring that their shared history remains intertwined within the same walls.

Beyond the holdings in Dordrecht, a number of her own works can be found in the same museum, allowing a viewer to see her hand alongside the pieces she preserved from her father's studio. Her presence in the art world is also felt in Rotterdam, where some of her works are held within the Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum. These collections offer a way to encounter the traces of her life as a sculptor, painter, and designer through the objects she created and the pieces she chose to leave behind.
