Born in Alkmaar, Netherlands, Dirk Oudes was a man of diverse talents, serving as both a clockmaker and a painter. Early in his development, he sought to hone his skills by copying Old Flemish Masters, but his stylistic path evolved significantly over time. He was influenced by the works of Vincent van Gogh, eventually moving toward an expressionist style that saw him categorized among the "Moderns" of his era.
Oudes's technical approach to color and mixing was shaped by the German painter Erwin Bowien, who lived and worked in Egmond.
