Born in London, the son of an innkeeper in Long Acre, Stothard’s early life was marked by a delicate constitution, prompting his relocation to Yorkshire at the age of five and subsequent schooling at Acomb and Tadcaster. His colouring is often rich and glowing in the style of Rubens, who Stothard admired. The Vintage painting is considered one of his finest achievements.

Stothard's contribution to Shakespeare’s Gallery was particularly noteworthy—a collaborative effort with Flaxman that aimed to elevate the visual arts alongside literature.
