The History and Origins of Greenway

Greenway is an estate situated on the River Dart near Galmpton in Devon, England. The site has a documented history reaching back to 1493, when it was first mentioned in records as "Greynway." Its position near the river has long connected the property to the maritime activity of the region. The estate was once the private home of the author Agatha Christie, who purchased the property in 1938 alongside Max Mallowan.

The estate's connection to the local landscape was further integrated into the regional transport network through the Greenway Halt railway station. This station served the property and the surrounding area via the Dartmouth Steam Railway. In 2000, the property was placed into the care of the National Trust, ensuring its preservation for the public. The estate remains a significant site within the South Hams district, maintaining its historical character through its association with the River Dart.

The Architecture and Building of Greenway

The current house at Greenway is a Georgian architectural style building. It was constructed by Roope Harris in the late 18th century. The structure is a Listed Building, designated as Grade II*. The property's status as a Grade II listed building was confirmed on 3 March 2004.

The estate extends beyond the main house to include a Grade II listed park and garden. These grounds encompass the landscape surrounding the residence, which is situated near the River Dart in Devon, England. The architectural character of the site reflects the development of the estate through the 18th and 19th centuries.

The Rich History of the Estate

The history of the Greenway estate is tied to the maritime and colonial interests of the West Country. Sir Humphrey Gilbert, a member of the group known as "The West Country Men" alongside Walter Ralegh and Carew Ralegh, is thought to have been born here. The estate remained within the Gilbert family until about 1680, when it was sold to Thomas Martyn. Ownership later passed to the Roope family, and in 1771, the estate was inherited by Roope Harris.

The property underwent significant changes through various hands in the 18th and 19th centuries. Edward Elton held the estate from 1742 until 1811. Later, the land was acquired by Thomas Bolitho of Trewidden, Cornwall. During the Bolitho tenure, the pleasure grounds were developed with extensive collections of camellias, magnolias, and rhododendrons, including specimens obtained from the early expeditions of George Forrest to Yunnan.

The estate has transitioned from a private residence to a site held in care by the National Trust. It has served various purposes over the centuries, including acting as a nursery for evacuees from Paddington during the Second World War. The site remains a significant location for those studying the history of the River Dart and the families who shaped the Devon landscape.

The Diverse Collections at Greenway

The collection at Greenway comprises over 12,000 items. These objects reflect the domestic life and personal interests of the estate's former residents. The holdings include ceramics, glass, and silver. Among the smaller items are straw work boxes and watches. These pieces are held alongside various forms of furniture and a selection of souvenirs.

Archaeological significance is represented through Max Mallowan's excavated archaeology. These items are kept within the estate's holdings. The variety of the collection spans from functional household objects to specific historical finds. Each item remains part of the permanent assembly maintained at the property.
