The Life and Work of J. Breuningk

Born in the Netherlands, J. Breuningk belonged to a generation of painters who helped define the visual language of the Dutch Golden Age. His career was most active during the second half of the 17th century, a period when the mastery of light and the depiction of material textures reached a high point in Northern European art. While the specific details of his early training remain obscured by time, his stylistic leanings suggest a deep engagement with the traditions of his contemporaries.

The influence of Willem van Aelst is evident in the way Breuningk approached his subjects. This connection points toward a preoccupation with the meticulous arrangement of objects and the subtle interplay of shadow. His work reflects the disciplined observation required to translate the physical world onto a wooden panel or canvas, focusing on the quiet dignity of the objects he chose to portray. He operated within a tradition that valued precision and the ability to capture the essence of a scene through careful composition.

Notable Works and Collections

The surviving record of Breuningk's output is centered upon a single significant contribution to the genre of still life. This work, titled Still Life, offers a glimpse into the artist's technical approach and his place within the Dutch tradition. It remains the primary piece of his oeuvre preserved in our catalog.

The painting is currently held within the Finnish National Gallery in Helsinki. This collection preserves the work as a representative example of the artist's hand. Dated to about 1759, the piece provides a specific point of reference for understanding his period of activity.
