Early Life and Education Born: May 19, 1834, in Salem, Massachusetts Parents: Henry Gardiner Bridges (a sea captain) and Eliza Chadwick Bridges Orphaned at age fifteen after the deaths of both parents in 1849. Raised by her older sister, Eliza, who was a schoolteacher. Studied drawing during convalescence from an illness, influenced by artist Anne Whitney.
