Later Years and Death

He settles on a farm along the River Hudson, living there with his two daughters and his son. The landscape of his later life is defined by this American setting, far from the Royal Academy. He continues to paint occasionally during these years. It is said that he acquired wealth through his painting.
His time on the Hudson is marked by a stark reality. In 1815, he is recorded as having severely beaten his slave, Robert, who was in a relationship with Sojourner Truth. This incident highlights the darker, systemic realities of his existence. He died on 24 April 1819.
