The Visionary Tapestry of Georgia Hayes
Born in 1946, Georgia Hayes has cultivated a career defined by a profound sensitivity to the world around her, weaving together threads of myth, memory, and the natural landscape. Her artistic journey is one of deep observation, rooted in a formative period of study under the renowned painter Roy Oxlade between 1977 and 1982. This mentorship provided the foundation for a distinctive approach characterized by expressive brushwork and an unwavering dedication to capturing the sublime. While her roots are firmly planted in the British art tradition, her vision is expansive, often transcending geographical boundaries to explore the intersection of ancient legends and contemporary graphic expression.
The evolution of Hayes’s style reflects a masterful balance between the figurative and the abstract. Throughout the 1980s and 90s, she navigated a vibrant art scene that encouraged experimentation, allowing her to distill complex human emotions into striking visual compositions. Her work often draws from a diverse reservoir of inspirations, ranging from the intimate—friends, animals, and personal objects—to the monumental, including Western, Middle Eastern, and Ancient Egyptian cultures. By utilizing sketches, photographs, and even elements of street art as creative springboards, she creates a dialogue between the past and the present, making the ancient feel startlingly immediate.
Mythic Narratives and Fluidity of Form
One of the most captivating aspects of Hayes’s oeuvre is her ability to reimagine classical mythology through a modern lens. In works such as SAVED BY DROWNING (SICILIAN FOUNTAIN 2) , she invites the viewer into a dreamlike realm where the legend of the nymph Arethusa is breathed into life with vivid, saturated color. Her technique eschews rigid outlines in favor of organic, flowing shapes, allowing the paint itself to dictate the movement of the figures. This fluidity creates a sense of spontaneity and transformation, as if the characters are emerging directly from a primal energy. In these compositions, she often introduces unexpected, surrealist motifs—such as a figure wielding a baseball bat—which injects a layer of modern friction into the classical narrative, keeping the viewer in a state of constant discovery.
Beyond myth, Hayes possesses a remarkable ability to capture the essence of place and solitude. Her paintings often explore themes of contemplation and the transformative power of the landscape, reflecting an enduring fascination with the textures of the natural world. Whether she is exploring the intricate details of a bird or the vastness of a historical setting, her use of color and texture serves to evoke deep emotional responses, turning a mere depiction of a subject into a visceral experience of presence and memory.
