The Visual Composition of Cubierta

Created in 1960, Cubierta is an abstract painting that features a rich dark indigo-blue background. The composition is defined by three horizontal rectangular fields of color arranged across the canvas. A vibrant red middle section serves as a focal point, positioned between a dark upper section and a deep black lower section.

The artwork utilizes Mark Rothko’s characteristic technique of blending colors with soft, undefined edges. This method creates a sense of depth and contemplative space within the piece, emphasizing the juxtaposition of the bold red squares against the serene blue backdrop.
