The Life and Form of Ctibor Krčmár

Born in Semerovo, Ctibor Krčmár lived a life deeply connected to the landscapes of Slovakia. His path as an artist began in the private school of Gustáv Mahler in Bratislava, a foundation that led him through the rigorous training of the post-war era. After the second world war, he moved to Prague to study at the State Graphic School, learning under the guidance of Peter Dilinger and Karol Muller. His education continued at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, where he refined his skills under the instruction of Vladimír Sychr, Ján Želibský, and Otokar Nejedlý. By 1952, he had completed his studies and began a life of creative practice that would define his legacy.

Krčmár was a man of many disciplines, working as a painter, graphic artist, and modeler. He eventually settled in Piešťany, a place that became the center of his world. It was here that he lived and worked until his death in 1990. His presence in the region was felt through his regular participation in various exhibitions, including several selections of his work held in Piešťany, Semerovo, and Dubník. His art was not an abstract pursuit but a way of looking at the specific surroundings of southern Slovakia and the Kysuce region.

Artistic Focus and Collections

His work often sought to capture the essence of his surroundings, turning the quiet details of the Slovak landscape and local life into visual records. His output was diverse, spanning several decades and various mediums. The following works represent his presence in significant collections:

A Legacy in Paint and Form

The breadth of Krčmár's talent allowed him to move between the delicate precision of graphics and the weight of modeling. His paintings, often executed in oil on canvas, reflected a deep familiarity with the light and atmosphere of the places he called home. Whether he was depicting a simple bouquet or a scene from a concert, his work remained rooted in the reality of the world around him. His life's work remains held in various galleries, preserving the visual memory of the regions he loved.
