Édouard Jean Marie Hostein lived a life defined by the quiet observation of the natural world. His later years saw him capturing the light of the Mediterranean, specifically around Monaco and Monte-Carlo. These works, dating to 1872, suggest a fascination with the bright, clear atmosphere of the coast. Even in his final decade, Hostein remained active, producing pieces like Castelnau in 1879. He died in 1889, leaving behind a body of work that serves as a visual record of the French landscape during a transformative era.
