The Quietude of the Watercolor
The year is 1936. A figure sits in a moment of stillness, captured through the delicate medium of watercolor on paperboard. This is the essence of James Nibbie’s contribution to the American visual record. In Boy Sitting on Cot, the artist moves away from the grandiosity often found in large-scale oil paintings, opting instead for the intimacy of a smaller scale. The work exists within the permanent collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, a testament to the quiet importance of his observational eye.
Nibbie’s work reflects a specific era of American art, where the focus often turned toward the human condition in its most unadorned states. The choice of paperboard as a substrate suggests a directness, a need to capture a scene without the heavy preparation required by canvas.
