Early Life, Family and Training
Johan Hammer was born around 1640. His roots likely trace back to Germany, and he may have been the brother of the portraitist Hans Jurgen Hammar. By 1655, he was already working as a German journeyman within the studio of Werner Rölefintz. This early period of his life was defined by the steady, practical work of a craftsman learning the nuances of his trade in a professional workshop setting.
His personal life took a significant turn in 1668 when he married Elsa Elisabeth Langmarck, who came from Kiel. This union marked a period of settling into his professional identity as he moved through the various stages of a painter's career. His training and early years in the studio provided the technical foundation that would later allow him to move between the roles of a portraitist, a decorator, and a painter of church interiors.
Patrons, Workshop and Commissions
By 1669, Hammer had attained the status of master within the Stockholm Painters' Guild. This recognition opened doors to significant aristocratic patronage, most notably through his employment by Magnus Gabriel De la Gardie. His hands were busy across several of De la Gardie's estates, moving between the walls and ceilings of various properties. Much of this labor was concentrated at Läckö Castle, where his presence was felt through a variety of decorative tasks. He also worked at Mariedal, Kägleholm, and Venngarn, adapting his brush to the specific needs of these grand residences.
The scale of his commissions often required him to look upward. In 1677, he was tasked with a ceiling painting for the dining room at Karlberg Palace. This work, depicting the siege of Novgorod in 1611, was later moved to the fortification hall during the 1946 restoration of the palace. His ability to handle such large-scale subjects helped define the visual character of the spaces he was hired to decorate.
Religious Works and Later Career
The shifting political landscape of the late 17th century eventually altered the course of Hammer's career. Following the reduction to the crown, which brought an end to his long-standing service to Magnus Gabriel De la Gardie, he moved to Gothenburg in 1681. This relocation marked a transition from the grand, secular settings of various estates to a focus on ecclesiastical spaces. In this new environment, his hand was frequently applied to the interiors of local churches, where his style began to merge the traditions of palace decoration with religious themes.
His work in these sacred spaces left a visible mark on the regional landscape. He completed an altarpiece for Husaby Church in 1675 and later produced an altarpiece for Kungälv Church in 1683. These commissions show a steady hand applied to the specific needs of parish worship. His influence was particularly felt in Gothenburg, where his ceiling painting in the German Church became a significant reference point. This work combined the decorative language of courtly ceiling painting with the solemnity required for a church setting, helping to shape the visual character of the area's religious art.

Key Works and Legacy
Hammer’s hand is visible in several significant pieces that survived the passage of time. In 1674, he painted the Capture of Novgorod (1611), a work that captures a moment of military history. His brush also found its way to the sacred spaces of Sweden, such as the altarpiece he completed for Bro Church in Bohuslän in 1695. These works show a painter capable of moving between the grand scale of historical events and the quiet requirements of a local parish.
His influence extended into the very architecture of the churches he decorated. In Gothenburg, his ceiling painting in the German Church was noted for how it blended ecclesiastical themes with the style of palace painting. Though many of his large-scale works, like those in the German Church or Björlanda, were lost to fire or time, his presence remains in the collections of the National Museum in Stockholm. He died in Gothenburg in 1698, leaving behind a body of work that helped shape the visual character of Swedish church interiors.
