The Artistic Journey of Walter Jacob
Born in Altenburg, Germany, Walter Jacob was a painter, printmaker, graphic artist, and draftsperson. His early artistic development was shaped by a mentorship with Ernst Müller-Gräfe, which began after Jacob abandoned several apprenticeships to pursue a career in art. His early works, often produced as drawings due to financial constraints, showed an orientation toward Impressionism. Following his service as a war volunteer in World War I, he studied at the Royal Academy of Arts in Dresden with the support of Professor Robert Sterl. During a productive phase in 1920, supported by collector Heinrich Kirchhoff, Jacob produced significant works such as Dream, Inntal, Tomb of B.A. von Lindenaus, and Boy with Apple.
Style and Later Years
Jacob's style evolved from Impressionism toward Expressionism, characterized by intense colors and expressive compositions. He spent significant time in various landscapes, including Hallig Hooge, the mountains, and the sea, finding a deep connection to nature. His later works, particularly after World War II, reflected on his experiences through series like Bergdämonen and Der verlorene Sohn. In his final years, his watercolors exhibited a surprisingly abstract language. His career included a major retrospective in Paris in 1956, showcasing 200 works including paintings, drawings, and watercolors. He died in Bad Hindelang, Germany.
