The Artistic Practice of Esther Stocker
Esther Stocker is an Italian painter, sculptor, and video artist born in Schlanders. Her work is primarily characterized by non-objective paintings executed exclusively in black and white. These works often utilize geometric grids as a fundamental design principle, where regular geometric structures are intentionally interrupted by specific deviations and irregularities. Beyond her paintings on canvas, Stocker’s practice extends to spatial installations, site-specific art, and three-dimensional works. Her sculptural practice includes "crumpled objects," where she applies grid structures to flat materials and then deforms them into crumpled, spherical bodies.
Her diverse body of work also encompasses photography, applied arts such as textile and furniture design, and large-scale architectural art. Since 2003, she has created numerous site-specific works on buildings across Europe and Asia, including facades and walls in locations such as Graz, Otterndorf, Tamano, and Shanghai.
