Biografija umetnika Kees Maks
A Life Between Amsterdam and Paris
Cornelis Johannes Maks, known to many as Kees Maks, lived a life that moved between the quiet streets of his native Amsterdam and the bustling energy of Paris. Born in 1876, he began his formal training at the Rijksakademie, but it was under the guidance of George Hendrik Breitner that his artistic path truly took shape. This early mentorship left a lasting mark on his approach to the canvas.
His years were often split between two major European hubs. While his roots remained in the Netherlands, he found a significant part of his creative spirit in France. He was a regular presence at the Salon d'Automne in Paris for decades, exhibiting there from 1910 through the 1940s. This movement between cities allowed him to absorb different atmospheres, blending Dutch sensibilities with the changing trends of the French art scene.
The Spirit of the Night and the Circus
Maks found his true subject matter in the lively, often fleeting moments of social life. He turned his attention toward themes that were quite new to the Dutch tradition at the time. His canvases frequently captured the excitement of circus acts, the movement of dancing couples, and the atmosphere of garden parties. He had a particular interest in the fashionable nightlife of the era, bringing scenes of theatre and walking companies to life.
His technique relied on a specific way of seeing the world. He used bold, robust arrangements and focused on extreme contrasts between light and shade. Rather than fine, delicate details, he worked with simplified masses of bright, strong colors. This method gave his paintings a sense of weight and presence. His work often featured:
- Circus performances and clowns
- Theatrical scenes
- Garden parties and social gatherings
- Dancing couples in motion
A Place in the Modern Era
During the interwar period, as many artists across Europe began to move away from the avant-garde toward a more neo-classical figuration, Maks found himself part of this shift. This movement, often called Retour à l'ordre, saw him and contemporaries like Kees van Dongen embracing a more structured approach to the human figure. His work was appreciated for its modern character, even when some of his peers in the Netherlands viewed his style as being somewhat removed from local traditions.
His contributions were recognized on several international stages. He participated in the Munich Secession exhibitions in the early years of the 20th century and saw his work included in art competitions for both the 1928 and 1948 Summer Olympics. By the time he passed away in Amsterdam in 1967, he had left behind a body of work that captured a specific, lively era of European life through a lens of bold color and light.
