A Life Between Borders

Born in South Africa in 1954, Larry Abramson carried the seeds of a new identity across oceans when his family immigrated to Israel in 1961. His early years in Jerusalem were marked by a profound engagement with the world around him, even as a high school senior when he joined others in expressing conscientious objection to political decisions regarding peace initiatives. This early sense of responsibility would later find its way into the very fabric of his canvases.

His education took him far from the hills of Jerusalem to the Chelsea School of Art in London, where he studied a Foundation Course between 1973 and 1974. These years abroad provided him with the technical tools that would later allow him to bridge the gap between different eras of art history. Upon returning to Israel, he found work as a printer and curator at the Jerusalem Print Workshop, a position he held for many years. This period of working closely with the mechanics of printmaking deeply influenced his approach to color and form, teaching him how layers of transparent pigment could create the sensation of an image emerging or submerging beneath a surface.

The Language of Symbols

As his career progressed, Abramson began to develop a unique visual vocabulary composed of recurring motifs that acted like linguistic units. In the 1980s, he turned his attention to the symbols of European modernism. He utilized the Black Square by Kazimir Malevich to create situations where abstraction and figurative elements met in tension. This was not merely an exercise in style, but a way to use established art history to speak to contemporary realities.

His work often moved through series that explored specific landscapes and histories. In the 1990s, his tsooba series brought a heavy focus to the landscape of Kibbutz Tzova. Through thirty-eight oil paintings and corresponding impressions on newspaper, he addressed the layers of memory embedded in the land. By painting the view realistically and then intentionally defacing it, he sought to bring visibility to ruins that might otherwise be overlooked or erased from the collective gaze. Other series, such as The Pile, used charcoal drawings of construction debris to explore the representation of ruins and the weight of history.

Teaching and Legacy

Beyond the studio, Abramson was a central figure in the academic life of Israeli art. He spent decades shaping the next generation of creators, first at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem, where he served as Chairman of the Fine Art Department, and later at Shenkar College. His role as the founding director of the Bezalel Program for Young Artists allowed him to foster a space for advanced study and experimentation.

His contributions were recognized through various honors, including the Beatrice S. Kolliner Award from the Israel Museum and the Mendel and Eva Pundik Prize. Throughout his life, whether living in Jerusalem or moving to Tel Aviv in 2011, his work remained a site of dialogue. He was a founding member of Artists Without Walls, a group dedicated to fostering conversation between Israeli and Palestinian artists, proving that his art was always inseparable from his commitment to the complexities of the place he called home.
