Memorial Art Gallery

Origins and History of the Gallery

The Memorial Art Gallery was founded in 1913 by Emily Sibley Watson. She established the institution in memory of her son, the architect James Averell. Following its founding, the museum was given in trust to the University of Rochester. This arrangement allows the institution to function as one of the few university-affiliated art museums in the country that also serves a community role.

The gallery was dedicated on October 8, 1913. For more than 100 years, the institution has been a central part of the cultural life in Rochester. Its presence in the city has remained constant through various expansions and shifts in the local landscape.

The Building and its Architecture

The 1913 structure remains the oldest building on the campus and is still owned by the University. Designed by the firm Foster, Gade and Graham, the edifice was constructed primarily of Indiana limestone. Its Italian Renaissance style was intended to resemble Malatesta's chapel in Rimini, Italy. Local architect Claude Bragdon supervised the construction of this original building.

The facility has expanded through several distinct architectural phases. A 1926 addition doubled the original 14,000 square feet of space. Later, in 1968, a new addition was completed by Waasdorp, Northrup and Kaelber. This later structure follows the International Modern style, providing a contrast to the limestone masonry of the primary building.

The Permanent Collection

The permanent collection contains more than 13,000 objects, spanning over 7,000 years of art history. It is recognized as the most balanced collection in the state outside of metropolitan New York City. The holdings range from relics of antiquity to works representing the vanguard of contemporary practice. This breadth allows for a continuous study of human creativity across millennia.

The museum maintains a significant selection of sculptures by Gaston Lachaise. These works are held alongside diverse international pieces, including a Chinese Guanyin sculpture. The collection's scope is defined by this variety, moving from historical traditions to modern movements. The breadth of the holdings is reflected in the following specific items:

Masterpieces of the Collection

The permanent collection contains significant works from various eras, including a Rembrandt and three paintings by Claude Monet. These pieces are part of a selection that spans over 7,000 years of art history. The holdings also include works by Winslow Homer and Thomas Hart Benton, representing different movements and perspectives within the American tradition.

Local history is preserved through a collection of portraits painted by Grove Sheldon Gilbert during the mid-to-late 19th century. These works provide a visual record of the region's past. The museum's breadth is further defined by its diverse holdings, which include a Chinese Guanyin sculpture and various prints and drawings held in the Lockhart Gallery.

Exhibitions and Research

The institution maintains a year-round schedule of temporary exhibitions, lectures, concerts, tours, and family activities. These programs are designed to engage the community through diverse formats. The current exhibition schedule includes Desire and Abundance: American Culture and the Still Life, which remains on view from December 13, 2025, through November 29, 2026.

Specific areas within the facility are dedicated to particular media and historical themes. The Lockhart Gallery is used to present prints and drawings from the collection of works on paper. Historical research and community narratives are also reflected in past programming, such as the Rochester Homelands Exhibition, which examined the traditional arts and crafts of various immigrant cultures in the region.

Recent Projects and Campus

The campus spans 14 acres and includes the Vanden Brul pavilion, which opened in May 1987 to link the Gallery with the Cutler Union. In 2013, the institution established the Centennial Sculpture Park to integrate art into the surrounding urban landscape. This park was designed to remove physical barriers and create a creative commons for the community.

Recent institutional developments focus on increasing accessibility through the Free for all, Forever initiative. This program aims to make general admission free starting May 1, 2027. The necessary funding for this transition was secured in May 2026, when the Free for all Endowment reached its goal of more than $9 million.
