The Life and Artistic Journey of Charles Peccatte
Born in Baccarat, France, Charles Peccatte was a painter who dedicated much of his life to the landscapes of the Vosges. After refusing to pursue studies in law, he affirmed his vocation as an artist at the age of seventeen. His early career saw him exhibiting works such as Bord de Meurthe at the first Salon de Saint-Dié, followed by several canvases presented at the Salon de Nancy in 1888. His artistic path took him from the Académie Colarossi in Paris to various regions including Brittany, Vendée, and the sunny landscapes of Italy and the Côte d’Azur.
Peccatte’s work primarily consisted of oil landscapes, executed with either a brush or a palette knife. His reputation grew through exhibitions at the Salon d'automne and the Salon des artistes décorateurs, with his paintings traveling to international cities such as London, Montreal, Turin, and Rome. In 1910, he was appointed as the secretary of the painting jury for the Salon d'automne in Paris.
Civic Engagement and Legacy
Beyond his canvas, Peccatte was deeply involved in the public life of Saint-Dié, serving on the municipal council and acting as a member and later president of the Société philomatique vosgienne. He served as the curator of the local museum from 1910 until his death in 1962. He was also instrumental in organizing the "Saint-Dié marraine de l’Amérique" exhibition in 1911.
Tragedy struck in 1944 when German troops destroyed Saint-Dié, resulting in the loss of many of Peccatte's works and his own home. In the aftermath, he continued to work, sometimes recreating lost works from memory in a style that shifted toward the influence of Seurat. His legacy remains tied to the region, where a street in his birthplace of Baccarat now bears his name.
