Born in Erfurt, Germany, in 1813, Eduard Gerhardt possessed a mind that sought order in both structure and shadow. He studied the discipline of building at Cologne and later under Semper in Dresden, developing an eye for the way light interacts with heavy, permanent forms. By the late 1830s, Gerhardt had moved to Munich to pursue painting, a transition that allowed him to marry his architectural knowledge with a painterly sensibility. This patronage provided the means for Gerhardt to travel, leading him away from the German landscape toward the sun-drenched complexities of Italy and the Iberian Peninsula.
