Frank Wasley (1854 - 1934): A Painter of Turbulent Landscapes

Stephen Frank Wasley was born in Peckham, South London, in 1854, a son of Samuel Wasley, a solicitor and his wife Eliza Jane (née Smith). His early life was marked by musical pursuits; he began cello lessons at the age of five and travelled extensively as a musician throughout Canada. This itinerant lifestyle instilled in him a restless spirit that would continue to shape his artistic endeavors.
  • Early Career: Wasley’s initial foray into art involved charcoal sketching, quickly establishing a preference for this medium which he utilized with considerable skill and sensitivity.
  • Whitby Years (1880-1903): He settled in Whitby, Yorkshire, where he established his studio and began to develop his distinctive style—characterized by bold brushstrokes and expressive handling of paint.
  • London Engagement (1908): Wasley moved to Littlehampton in 1908, continuing to produce paintings that reflected the changing landscapes of Britain.
Wasley’s artistic vision was profoundly influenced by Turner, whose atmospheric landscapes served as a cornerstone for his own approach to painting. He embraced a “free” and confident style, employing a palette knife alongside traditional brushwork to convey dynamism and emotion. His subjects encompassed Venice, ancient cities, seascapes—particularly those of the Yorkshire coast—and shipping scenes off Malta.
  • Notable Exhibitions: Wasley’s work gained recognition through appearances at prestigious galleries including the Royal Academy, Birmingham Art Gallery, The Walker Art Gallery of Liverpool, and The New Gallery.
  • Australian Collections: Remarkably, over a dozen of his paintings were discovered in collections across Australia, demonstrating the enduring appeal of his artistic vision.
Throughout his career, Wasley produced approximately 300 paintings—primarily oil on canvas—that exemplify the expressive power of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. His meticulous attention to detail combined with a masterful command of color and texture resulted in landscapes that capture not only visual beauty but also the emotional resonance of natural environments. He is represented in public collections in Sunderland, Whitby and Nottingham.
