Born in 1904 in Palisade, Colorado, Martin’s early years were far from the sheltered existence of many of his contemporaries. Raised in a family of seven children, his youth was shaped by the migratory rhythms of the American West, leading
him through Idaho and Washington. Before he ever picked up a brush with professional intent, Martin had lived the very lives he would later immortalize on canvas. He worked as a printer from the age of twelve, labored as a lumberjack, and even stepped into the ring as a professional boxer.
