, an Italian painter, was born in or near Fabriano, in the Marche region of Italy, around 1370. His mother passed away before 1380, and his father, Niccolò di Giovanni Massi, retired to a monastery in 1385. Little is known about Gentile's early artistic formation, but one of his first known works, Madonna with Child (c. 1395-1400, now in Berlin), shows the influence of northern Italian late-Gothic painting.
* By around 1405, Gentile da Fabriano was working in Venice, where he painted a panel for the church of Santa Sofia (now lost). He also collaborated with Jacopo Bellini and knew Pisanello and Michelino da Besozzo. * Between 1410-1412, he created one of his masterpieces, the Valle Romita Polyptych (now at the Pinacoteca di Brera). * In 1423, Gentile da Fabriano painted his famous altarpiece, Adoration of the Magi, now in the Uffizi, regarded as one of the masterpieces of the International Gothic style.
Gentile da Fabriano is known to have died before October 14, 1427. He was buried in the church of Santa Maria in Trastevere, Rome, or possibly in the church now called S. Francesca Romana in Florence, although his tomb vanished.
