The Shadow of Cairo A child flees the Ottoman Empire in 1924, part of a family escaping the Armenian genocide. Levon Alexander Boyadjian arrives in Egypt, settling into the cosmopolitan pulse of Cairo. The teenage years are defined by a specific obsession: Hollywood postcards. These small, glossy fragments of distant glamour introduce him to a world of dramatic side-lighting and deep, intentional shadows. He watches how hands are posit
ioned and how props create a sense of theater. This is the foundation of his visual language. By 1940, he withdraws from his studies at the American University in Cairo to pursue photography full-time. The transition from student to apprentice begins at Studio Venus under Arakel Artinian.
