The elder Catton provides the first lessons, offering direct art tuition that grounds the boy in the fundamentals of drawing and composition from a young age.
This familial apprenticeship provides the foundation for formal academic pursuit. Artistic Career in London
London provides the stage for Catton’s professional ascent. Between 1776 and 1800, he maintains a consistent presence at the Royal Academy, exhibiting 37 works in total. His output during these years reflects a dual identity: the meticulous topographical artist and the theatrical scene-painter. He moves between the precision required for landscape sketches and the large-scale demands of the stage, capturing the specificities of the British landscape while simultaneously designing the visual environments for the theater.
The theater becomes a primary site of his labor. From 1781 to 1794, he serves as a scene painter at Covent Garden. Here, his work shifts from the quietude of topographical views to the grand, artificial spectacles required for opera and drama. This period of theatrical employment coincides with his reputation as a draughtsman capable of translating complex scenery into painted backdrops. His ability to navigate these different artistic requirements defines his London years, bridging the gap between the fine art of the Academy and the commercial demands of the playhouse.

Technique and Artistic Style
Catton operates at the intersection of precision and printmaking. As a topographical draughtsman, he focuses on the structural accuracy required to map landscapes and specific locations. This technical discipline extends into his work as an illustrator and copper engraver, where the physical act of incising metal meets the demand for visual clarity. His hand moves between the broad requirements of theatrical scene-painting and the minute, exacting details of engraving .
In 1788, his technical range expands through the publication of Animals Drawn from Nature and Engraved in Aqua-tinta . This volume utilizes the aquatint process to achieve tonal depth, moving beyond simple line work. The collection features thirty-six animals sourced from across the globe, rendered through this specialized method of etching . The medium allows for a specific gradation of light and shadow that distinguishes his animal studies from his more linear topographical sketches.
Later Years and Death
The year 1804 marks a definitive shift in his life. He leaves behind the established artistic circles of London and emigrates to the United States. He settles on a farm along the River Hudson, living there with his two daughters and his son. The landscape of his later life is defined by this American setting, far from the Royal Academy. He continues to paint occasionally during these years. It is said that he acquired wealth through his painting.
His time on the Hudson is marked by a stark reality. In 1815, he is recorded as having severely beaten his slave, Robert, who was in a relationship with Sojourner Truth. This incident highlights the darker, systemic realities of his existence. He died on 24 April 1819.
