A life in miniature

Born in Charlieu to a joiner named Louis Millet and Jeanne-Marie Girard, Frédéric Millet spent his years focused on the small and the precise. He did not follow the path of his father's woodworking, but instead sought instruction under d’Aubry, Pernot, and Isabey. Of these teachers, he was noted as one of the most capable pupils of Isabey. His presence in the Paris Salon began in 1806, a regular fixture there for decades until 1859.

His domestic life in Paris was marked by his marriage to Marie-Henriette Rioux in 1810. Together they raised three children: Émile, Aimé, and Anne. He lived out his final days at home on Rue d'Amsterdam.

The precision of the brush

Millet worked primarily as a miniature painter and watercolourist. His hands were accustomed to the delicate demands of portraiture, often capturing the faces of figures from the First French Empire. He recorded the likenesses of individuals such as Marie Louise, the second wife of Napoleon, and members of the Orléans, Bassano, and Montebello families.

The technique he employed involved a specific layering of materials to achieve depth. In works like his self-portrait from around 1817, he used watercolour and gum arabic over pencil. This method allowed for a softness in the modeling of skin and a refinement in the light that gave a sense of weight to the faces he painted. His work often appeared on small scales, such as the gold bracelet containing a miniature of Marie Caroline, duchesse de Berry, which surfaced at auction in 2023.

A legacy in small frames

While his name is not often confused with the painter Jean-François Millet, his own contribution to the art of the miniature remains documented through various collections and auction records. His portraits, ranging from studies of young boys to formal likenesses of royalty, show a consistent dedication to the fine details of the sitter.

Some of his traces remain in public view, including:

  • A self-portrait held within the Musée du Louvre.
  • Portraits of Marie-Amélie and her daughter, the princess Marie d'Orléans.
  • Works on paper that have been sought after in various auction houses like Sotheby's Paris and Rouillac.
