Carl Joseph Meyer was a German entrepreneur, industrialist, publisher, and editor. He was born on May 9, 1796, in Gotha, Germany, and died on June 27, 1856, in Hildburghausen, Germany. Meyer is best known for founding the Bibliographisches Institut in 1826, which later became the Bibliographisches Institut & F. A. Brockhaus AG. He was also the publisher and editor of several successful encyclopedias, including Meyers Konversations-Lexikon.
