Johan Nieuhof fue un viajero y explorador holandés que nació en Uelsen, Alemania en 1618. He was employed by the Dutch East India Company and is best known for his travels to China, where he accompanied the Dutch Ambassador to the Chinese court in 1655-1657. Escribió un relato detallado de su viaje, que fue publicado en 1665 como "Una embajada de la Compañía Este-India de las Provincias Unidos al Emperador de China". Nieuhof murió en Madagascar en 1672.
