The story begins in Hawthorn, Melbourne, where Dora Meeson enters the world on 7 August 1869. The academic path is rigorous and varied. She finds herself at the Canterbury College School of Art in New Zealand before returning to the National Gallery School in Melbourne in 1895. Paris becomes a crucible for her development. Enrolling at the Académie Julian, she studies under Jean Paul Laurens and Benjamin Constant. London, 1900. The couple settles in England, eventually finding their footing in Chelsea. Life is not easy; early years in Ealing are marked by financial hardship, often relying on small illustrations for encyclopedias to sustain themselves. Dora refuses the domestic boundaries often imposed upon women artists of her era. She chooses subjects traditionally reserved for men. The year 1919 marks a significant professional milestone when she becomes the first Australian woman artist elected as a member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters in London.
