The rhythm of Fohn's professional life shifts abruptly with the onset of war. Between 1915 and 1918, he serves in the military, a period of interruption that precedes a return to the academic sphere. He eventually secures a position at the College of Fine Arts in Hamburg, holding a chair at the institution. This period of teaching gives way to a more nomadic existence. Following his service, he moves through Spain and Italy, seeking new environments for his practice.
The 1930s bring a period of prolonged residence in Rome, where he stays from 1933 until 1943. This decade marks a significant chapter of his life, set against the backdrop of a changing Europe. By 1943, the movement toward the south continues, but the destination changes. He settles in Kastelruth in South Tyrol, where he remains from that year onwards.
Artistic Style and Collection
Fohn’s brush focuses on the light. He works primarily in the impressionist tradition, producing bright-colored landscapes and veduten. His palette favors clarity, capturing the specific atmosphere of the scenes he depicts. This technical preference for light and color defines his visual output, moving away from the heavy shadows of more academic styles.
In 1933, he married his student, Sofie Schneider. Together, the couple turned their attention toward the preservation of art. They built a significant collection featuring works from the 18th and 19th centuries. This pursuit of art history took a dramatic turn during the Nazi regime. As the authorities classified various works as "Degenerate Art," Fohn and his wife moved to acquire these pieces. They purchased many of these works at low costs, effectively rescuing them from being lost or destroyed by the regime.
Legacy and Where to See Works
The preservation of Emanuel Fohn's artistic and personal history is tied to the significant contributions made by his family. In 1964, the couple bequeathed their extensive collection to the Bavarian State Painting Collection. This collection remains a vital part of the institutional holdings in Germany. Beyond the physical works, the impact of his life extends into the education of future generations through a dedicated foundation. Following his death, Sophie Fohn established the Emanuel and Sophie Fohn Scholarship to support highly talented students from Austria and South Tyrol.
His paintings find their way into several important regional repositories. The Bozen City Museum holds works by the artist, while his estate is kept at the Tiroler Landesmuseum Ferdinandeum. These locations ensure his presence in the public sphere remains intact.
