Upon his return to the United States, West established himself as a sought-after painter for the American elite. During his time in the South, he painted several family portraits in Natchez, Mississippi, contributing to the visual record of the region's prominent households. He remained dedicated to this vocation until his final years. While his professional life was centered in Baltimore, his life reached its conclusion in Nashville, Tennessee. He died in 1857, leaving behind a body of work that documented the faces of a growing nation.

The breadth of West’s output is reflected in the diverse institutions that hold his surviving works. His landscape work, Misty Mountains, created in 1821, resides within the Art Institute of Chicago. This piece utilizes a limited palette of brown wash and white gouache over graphite on tan wove paper to depict rugged, mist-shrouded peaks. His reputation as a portraitist is anchored by pieces held in significant national repositories. The National Portrait Gallery in Washington maintains his depiction of Stephen Olin.
