A Life Shaped by Earth and War

Born into a family of farmers and vintners in Laufen, Adolf Riedlin’s early years were rooted in the soil of the Breisgau region. His path toward the brush began not with high theory, but through a practical apprenticeship as a painter and decorator in Freiburg, which he completed in 1910. This foundation in craft provided a disciplined hand that would later navigate much more complex aesthetic territories.

The trajectory of his life was interrupted by the heavy machinery of history. Serving as a soldier during the First World War, Riedlin experienced the brutal realities of the West Front and the advance toward Stalingrad. He faced wounds and eventually endured American captivity until 1946. These years of conflict left deep imprints on his perspective, yet they did not halt his pursuit of formal training. Following the war, he sought out the guidance of masters, studying under Professor Walter Georgi in Karlsruhe and later finding a significant mentor in Adolf Hölzel at the Stuttgart Art Academy between 1919 and 1920.

The Evolution of Form and Style

Riedlin’s artistic development was marked by a restless movement through different European centers. A stay in Paris in 1928 introduced him to the fractured geometries of Cubism and the dreamlike logic of Surrealism. These encounters expanded his vocabulary beyond the landscapes of his youth. He became a pioneer of non-representational painting within the Baden region, pushing against the boundaries of what was traditionally depicted.

His work often balanced the weight of reality with the freedom of abstraction. While he was capable of expressive realism, particularly in his depictions of Markgräfler landscapes and local figures, he also embraced more experimental modes. His repertoire included:

  • Oil on linen, such as his early work Wäscherinnen
  • Chalk on canvas, used for more abstract compositions
  • Lithography and mixed media explorations
  • Frescoes, including large-scale works for public buildings like the Lortzingschule in Freiburg

A Legacy of Public and Private Marks

The later years of Riedlin’s life were spent largely in Freiburg im Breisgau. During the 1950s and 1960s, his focus shifted toward the public sphere through the creation of wall paintings for schools and other civic structures. These works, featuring subjects like horse tamers, brought his particular brand of modernism into the daily lives of the community. However, his career was not without hardship; as a member of the Badische Secession, he saw his group banned in 1936, and several of his paintings were confiscated or destroyed during the period of 'Entartete Kunst'.

Though much of his output faced the censors of the mid-century, his presence remains anchored in the collections of the Augustinermuseum Freiburg and the Dreiländermuseum Lörrach. He died in 1969, leaving behind a body of work that moved from the disciplined hand of a decorator to the experimental spirit of a modern painter.
