The Quiet Observation of the Polder
Gerard Altmann spent his life looking closely at the low-lying landscapes of the Netherlands. Born in Rotterdam, he developed a way of seeing the world that favored the steady, unhurried rhythms of the countryside. His hands were rarely still, moving between the heavy application of oil on canvas and the delicate, precise lines of an etching or a lithograph. He was a man of many mediums, finding a way to capture light whether through the soft wash of a watercolor or the sharp bite of a charcoal drawing.
His training began at the Academy of Art in Rotterdam between 1901 and 1904. During those years, he studied under Jan de Jong, Ferdinand Oldewelt, and Jan Striening. These early lessons shaped his eye, leading him toward the style of the Hague School. He did not seek to change the world so much as to record it, focusing on the way light hits a cow in a field or how a boat rests on the water near the Kaag. His work often centered on the Nienwkoopse plassen, the Reeuwjkse Plassen, and the Kaag, places where the water and the land meet in a constant, quiet dialogue.
Light and Landscape
There is a specific kind of stillness in his depictions of the Dutch landscape. He often returned to the polder, painting the wide, flat stretches of land where cattle and sheep graze under an open sky. His subjects were not grand monuments, but rather the small, essential details of rural life: a farm landscape with boats on a sunny day, or a simple view of a small cottage. He captured the way sunlight filters through trees to touch a cow, or the way a river looks as a boat passes under a drawbridge.
His technical range allowed him to explore different moods of the same scenery:
- Oil Paintings: Often used to ground his scenes in texture, such as his studies of cattle by a river or in a sunlit field.
- Watercolors and Drawings: Used for more immediate, fluid observations of the landscape.
- Prints and Etchings: Where he could experiment with line and shadow, such as his lithograph of a night scene in Tuscany.
Even when he traveled to France, his gaze remained rooted in the observation of light and form. He was a member of "Arti et Amicitiae" in Amsterdam and eventually shared his knowledge as a teacher to C.K. Stokdyk. By the time he died in Rotterdam in 1940, he had left behind a body of work that documented the textures of the Dutch earth, from the heavy soil of a polder to the light reflecting off a quiet lake.
