The geometry of everyday things

Hermann Glöckner lived much of his life in the shadow of Dresden. Born in Cotta in 1889, he spent his early years learning the practical side of design, attending vocational school in Leipzig and working as a textile designer. His hands were accustomed to patterns and weights long before they moved toward more abstract forms. Between 1904 and 1911, he sat in evening classes at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Dresden, where the study of geometry and projections began to take root. These early years were marked by a steady focus on the structural elements of design.

The years between 1914 and 1918 took him away from the studio to serve in infantry divisions across France, Russia, and Poland. When he returned, his work shifted toward the more rigorous logic of constructivism. He studied at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts under Otto Gussmann, though his experimental approach often sat apart from the expectations of the academy. In the years that followed, he found ways to sustain himself through the copying of paintings for the Gemäldegrále Alte Meister and by turning to sgraffito when political shifts made exhibiting difficult.

Materials and construction

Glöckner’s practice was often a quiet, private affair. He did not always require an audience beyond his wife, finding meaning in the way common, discarded objects could be reconfigured. His hands worked with what was available: twine, cardboard, matchboxes, and scraps of wood. By arranging these humble materials, he created reliefs and assemblages that relied on the tension between shape and surface.

His technical interests were specific and grounded in physical properties:

  • The use of sgraffito to create texture and depth.
  • The application of collage and relief techniques using found materials.
  • An interest in projections and the mathematical precision of geometry.
  • The creation of architectural reliefs and Tafelwerk.

A life in Dresden and Berlin

The bombing of Dresden during World War II destroyed his home and much of his work, eventually leading him to move to Loschwitz. For a long time, the official recognition he sought was withheld by the authorities of the GDR due to his formalist style. It was not until 1969 that his graphic work began to be shown again in the Kupferstichkabinett in Dresden. Later in life, he moved to West Berlin, where he lived with his cohabitee and eventually passed away in 1987.

Despite the periods of obscurity, his presence remained etched into the landscape of his home cities. A sculpture he created was permitted to stand near the Technische Universität Dresden, and another was placed in the park of the Hotel Bellevue. In 2008, a street in Loschwitz was named in his honor, marking a permanent connection between the man and the place where he practiced his craft.
