A Life of Rebellion and Law
Joaquín Clausell was a Mexican lawyer, political activist, and journalist who became known for his Impressionist paintings of Mexican landscapes and seascapes. Born in Campeche, his early life was marked by a rebellious nature; at age sixteen, a public confrontation with the governor led to his expulsion from school and the state. Seeking a new start, he moved to Mexico City, where he faced extreme poverty while pursuing legal studies. Despite being jailed for his political activities and journalism—including his work with opposition newspapers like El Demócrata—he eventually earned his law degree in 1901.
His political convictions even led him into exile in the United States and Paris. During his time in Paris, he encountered Impressionism, an influence that would later define his artistic output upon his return to Mexico.
Artistic Expression and Legacy
Clausell's painting career consisted of two main periods: the 1900s and the years from 1920 until his death. While his canvas works focused on landscapes and seascapes using oil, watercolor, and even wood or cardboard, he also used the walls of his studio to create a vast array of sketches and paintings. These mural-like works featured diverse themes such as religious icons, nudes, and animals, incorporating elements of Symbolism.
Though he did not consider himself a professional painter and often worked in isolation, his talent was recognized by notable figures like Diego Rivera and Dr. Atl. His landscapes frequently depicted the natural beauty of Mexico, including:
- The Valley of Mexico
- Tlalpan
- Iztacalco and Xochimilco
- The Pacific Coast
