A Life in Avant-Garde Expression
Suzanne Duchamp was a French Dadaist painter, collagist, sculptor, and draughtsman. Born in Blainville-Crevon, Seine-Maritime, in the Haute-Normandie Region of France, she was part of a prominent artistic family. Her early studies began at the École des Beaux-Arts in Rouen, where her initial works reflected styles such as Intimism, Fauvism, Impressionism, and a conservative Cubism. These early pieces often depicted childhood scenes and family life.
During the First World War, she served as a nurse at the Hôtel des Invalides in Paris. Her artistic career spanned five decades, during which she explored subject matter including the effects of the war, personal concerns regarding modern society, and her role as a modern woman artist. Her creative output often integrated painting, collage, and language in complex ways.
Evolution of Style and Subject Matter
Between 1916 and 1921, Duchamp produced a significant body of work characterized by a "mechanomorphic" language. These images utilized commonplace mechanical or technological objects to describe human agency, desire, or behavior. Notable works from this period include:
- Un et une menacés (A Threatened Male and Female)
- Multiplication Broken and Restored
- Ariette of Oblivion in the Thoughtless Chapel
- Marcel's Unhappy Readymade
Later, she and Jean Crotti moved toward a style called "Tabu," which featured more geometric and abstract forms seeking universal tropes. In her later years, she was a member of the Union des Femmes Peintres et Sculpteurs, regularly exhibiting landscapes, portraits, and flower still lifes. She died in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France.
