Dirck de Quade van Ravesteyn: A Painter at the Court of Rudolf II

Dirck de Quade van Ravesteyn (c. 1565 – c. 1620) was a Netherlandish painter who spent most of his career at the court of Rudolf II, Holy Roman Emperor, in Prague. He was an important member of the internationally known Prague school, the circle of Netherlandish and German artists whose refined, elegant Mannerism made Rudolf’s court one of the most brilliant artistic centres of its day. He was probably born in The Hague, and his father Claes belonged to a family of artists.

Training and Arrival in Prague

De Quade is said to have trained with a pupil of the Flemish painter Frans Floris. In 1589 he entered the service of Rudolf II, and he worked for the emperor for some two decades. By 1598 he owned a house in Prague’s Malá Strana district, below the castle. At court he worked in the milieu shaped by Bartholomeus Spranger and Hans von Aachen, the painters who defined the Rudolfine style: elongated, graceful figures, polished surfaces and learned allegory.

Allegory, Myth and Devotion

His paintings range from religious works to mythological and allegorical scenes. The best documented is the “Allegory on the Reign of Emperor Rudolf II” (1603), his only signed work, commissioned directly by the emperor and now in the collection of Strahov Monastery in Prague. It celebrates the imperial army’s capture of Pest from the Ottomans the previous year: Mars, an idealised portrait of the emperor, bars the way to the Turks, while personifications of Knowledge, Ceres, Justice and Peace gather around him. Among his mythological pictures is a “Venus Asleep” of about 1608, now in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Dijon, and his devotional works include a “Marriage of Saint Catherine.”

Later Years and Legacy

De Quade prospered at court: records show him lending large sums of money, possibly to subcontract commissions or to help other artists buy property, and he was listed as a creditor of both Rudolf II and his successor Matthias. Accounts differ as to whether he died in Prague or had returned to the Netherlands by 1619; he died around 1620. Like the work of most Rudolfine artists, his paintings were dispersed across Europe, and only a few remain in Prague, in the National Gallery. Today he is valued as one of the characteristic voices of Prague court art, whose elegant figures capture the refined and learned taste of Rudolf II’s court.
