Born Beverly Stoll in Brooklyn, New York, on December 20, 1922, Pepper’s artistic journey began unexpectedly at sixteen when she enrolled at Pratt Institute to pursue advertising design, photography, and industrial design—a pragmatic grounding that would later inform her sculptural practice. Her upbringing was shaped by strong, independent women; the daughter of Jewish immigrants, she grew up in a household where the boundaries of gendered expectations were non-existent. This early resilience paved the way for her move to post-war Europe in 1949, a pivotal era that would redefine her creative spirit. It was during this time that she encountered Frederick Kiesler, whose influence helped ignite her fascination with the avant-garde and the relationship between art and space.

Drawn to the transformative power of travel, Pepper’s education was as much a product of the world as it was the classroom. She studied painting in Paris at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière, absorbing the rhythmic influences of Cubist painter André Lhôte and the robust energy of Fernand Léger. Her wanderings through the studios of Ossip Zadkine and Brâncuși further broadened her artistic horizons, exposing her to diverse sculptural vocabularies that emphasized the essentiality of form. However, it was not in the studios of Europe that her true vocation revealed itself, but amidst the ancient, weathered grandeur of Cambodia.
In 1960, a visit to Angkor Wat fundamentally shifted her artistic focus. The sheer scale of the temple ruins—ancient stones being slowly reclaimed by centuries of jungle growth—struck her with an overwhelming sense of permanence and decay. This encounter catalyzed her transition from painting to sculpture, leading her to develop techniques that honored the raw materiality of stone while simultaneously disrupting conventional sculptural methods. She began to seek a dialogue between the man-made and the organic, a pursuit that would eventually lead her to settle in Italy, primarily in Todi, where she could live intimately with the landscapes that inspired her.
